The Height of Summer!

It’s the height of summer, and native plant gardens should be humming with insects. This is peak season for some of the most vibrant bloomers including, purple coneflower, blazing star, black-eyed Susan, wild bergamot, black cohosh, culver’s root, Joe pye-weed and cardinal flower all bursting into color and drawing in a wide array of pollinators. Warm summer soils fuel the growth of these sun-loving natives, whose ecological functions are at their finest now. Step outside and observe the life unfolding: native bees, butterflies, and moths gathering nectar, pollinating, and sustaining the food web right in your own yard. Your garden isn’t just beautiful, it’s alive with purpose.

We started Wildflower City because it was challenging to find native plants, especially straight species, near Jersey City. While native plants are essential for supporting biodiversity, improving ecosystem health, and creating vibrant, low-maintenance gardens, accessing them can be difficult, particularly without a car. We strive to make native plants more accessible and to help homeowners create ecologically rich landscapes that support pollinators, birds, and other wildlife. This year alone, we’ve designed and help maintain pollinator gardens in Clifton, Kearny, Bloomfield, Bayonne, Teaneck, Secaucus, and Jersey City. Transforming yards and green spaces into thriving habitats and working to educate homeowners and communities about the urgent need to garden sustainably and without the use of pesticides or herbicides is important to us.

Doug Tallamy recommends aiming for about 70% native plants in our gardens to truly support local ecosystems. As you keep growing your garden, try to include a mix of natives that bloom at different times of the year. It helps ensure food and habitat for pollinators all season long. If you need suggestions finding the right plants for your space and growing conditions, we’re happy to help!
