Spring Clean Up

With sunny days and warm temperatures ahead we are all aching with anticipation to get our hands in the soil and start spring cleaning. Don’t rush clean up and ruin the winter habitat you created. Gardening for wildlife requires a different management style. In the fall we left native plants standing instead of cutting the plants back and making everything look tidy. Those native plants provided shelter and food sources for native insects, small mammals, and birds. We left leaf litter in the perennial beds to provide overwintering shelter and help build healthy soil. Now that spring is just around the corner, we must be patient and show retraint. Let’s give nature time to wake up before we tackle the spring clean-up. We like to wait until late May and the daytime temperatures are consistently 50 or warmer, to carefully begin cutting back last year’s flower stalks. Hopefully by this time overwintering insects have emerged, and the birds have long since eaten up all the seeds and berries. Feel free to email us with questions you have about Spring clean up!
